Explores Authentic Rural Hospitality at Preah Dak Community-Based Tourism

As part of our ongoing commitment to community-based tourism and responsible travel, our team recently conducted an on-site inspection at Preah Dak Village—one of Siem Reap’s most vibrant and welcoming local communities.

Located just 15 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap town along the scenic route toward Banteay Srei temple, Preah Dak offers travelers a genuine look into everyday rural Cambodian life.

Here is a look behind the scenes at our site visit and why we are excited to integrate Preah Dak into our high-season itineraries!

Why Preah Dak CBT Matters to Sustainable Tourism

Community-Based Tourism (CBT) empowers local residents by turning their everyday cultural practices, culinary heritage, and traditional crafts into sustainable income streams.

During our walkthrough, the CWE Travel team evaluated:

  • Authentic Guest Engagement: Ensuring interactions with villagers feel welcoming, natural, and respectful rather than staged.

  • Safety & Accessibility: Assessing village walking routes, parking, shade, and hygienic food preparation spaces for international travelers.

  • Direct Community Benefit: Partnering directly with local families, artisans, and food vendors to ensure tour revenues directly support rural livelihoods.

Highlights from Our Site Inspection

Preah Dak is famous across Cambodia for its deep culinary traditions and handcrafted goods. Our team spent the morning testing local experiences to curate the very best stops for our guests:

1. The Legendary Nom Akor & Fresh Num Banh Chok

No visit to Preah Dak is complete without sampling its famous traditional foods. Our team observed local cooks preparing Nom Akor—soft, steamed palm sugar cakes made using age-old recipes—and fresh Num Banh Chok (Khmer rice noodles) topped with aromatic fish curry sauce. The freshness and authentic flavors are an absolute treat for food-loving travelers!

2. Traditional Handicrafts & Basketry

We visited home workshops where local families demonstrate traditional palm-leaf weaving, basketry, and hand-carved wooden crafts. These stops offer guests a wonderful chance to buy unique, handmade souvenirs directly from the artisans who craft them.

3. Scenic Village Architecture & Stilt Houses

Walking through the village’s dirt paths flanked by traditional wooden stilt houses, flower gardens, and shading palm trees, our team mapped out peaceful walking and cycling routes that avoid busy traffic spots.

How We Are Adding Preah Dak to CWE TRAVEL Itineraries

Because Preah Dak sits perfectly along the popular Banteay Srei and Phnom Kulen travel circuit, it provides an ideal cultural pitstop for our guests:

  • Interactive Lunch & Snack Breaks: A refreshing alternative to standard tourist restaurants, allowing guests to savor authentic local cuisine in a village setting.

  • Cycling & Tuk-Tuk Extensions: Easily integrated into our countryside bike tours or private tuk-tuk excursions.

  • Family-Friendly Experiences: Hands-on palm cake making and craft workshops that keep travelers of all ages engaged.
